Richmond Open Studios Partner Venues

The Visual Artists of Richmond is grateful to the Richmond Art Center, the NIAD Art Center, Point Richmond Gallery, and the Richmond Museum of History and Culture for supporting VAR’s vision of an independent, artist-organized open studios in Richmond. This page will give you more information on what to expect at each of our partner venues.

Artists are assigned to venues and accommodated depending on available space, with priority given to those with disabilities and other health issues as stated on their registration form. We also strive to have a mix of media at each venue.

Richmond Art Center

The Richmond Art Center’s is hosting Made in Richmond at its Main Gallery. Its spacious courtyard will welcome a maximum of fifteen artists. Tables and chairs will be provided, as well as some assistance loading and unloading (provided you let VAR know ahead of time), but no canopies. The courtyard has two shaded spaces.

What to bring: Your own umbrella or canopy. They have tables and chairs.

Wifi in the courtyard? Yes, but spotty.

Parking situation: There will be an open gate leading directly to the parking lot.


NIAD Art Center

Through its visual arts studio program, NIAD gives people with disabilities the skills and experience to express themselves, be independent and earn income as an artist. The NIAD Art Center has a lovely, cozy courtyard with a fountain. This space can comfortably hold six artists. NIAD has a few round tables with umbrellas for artists unable to bring their own. Its courtyard fits six artists. Umbrellas or canopies are provided to artists unable to bring their own.

Point Richmond Gallery

Point Richmond Gallery is both a small business and a space where emerging and established artists connect with educators, curators and collectors. It seeks to explore, share and support artful expressions as well as to contribute to Richmond’s vibrant character and creative economy. Point Richmond Gallery’s main space measures 30 x 18’ and comfortably fits six artists, all of which will have a wall space approximately 10’ wide in which to hang two dimensional work. Sculptors with large works are invited to explore the gallery’s delightful outdoor patio, which has its own entrance leading directly to the street.

What to bring: Let Erin know if your work requires a pedestal. Your own hanging hardware.

Richmond Museum of History and Culture

The Richmond Museum of History and Culture puts together educational programs for the benefit of the public including exhibits, tours, presentations, collections, research and events in support of Richmond’s history and culture. Their Seaver Gallery will provide wall space for 6 artists. The Museum will provide 6 foot tables to artists showing within the Museum’s gated outdoor garden, which is perfect for artists with 3D work, or those who require more than 10 feet of horizontal wall space. There are two shaded spots outside, and the rest require a canopy. Their Museum shop will be open and volunteers will be giving, museum tours

Museum Liaison: Maria Tuttle will provide guidance and address any questions during the installation and de-installation process.

What to bring: hanging hardware (picture hanging wire or sawtooth hangers) if showing 2D work inside, hanging tools (hammer, adhesive putty). A canopy and a chair if showing outside.

Parking situation: Plenty of parking around Nevin Ave on that day if you come in at 9:30 am. You’d walk very little from your car to the Museum Gallery entrance.
